The Challenge We Face

Addressing educational and social inequalities to support Black boys to
pursue positive life paths.

Black Caribbean pupils are nearly four times more likely to suffer permanent exclusion than the rest of the school population and boys of Black Caribbean heritage are disproportionately represented for numeracy and literacy attainment, with only 49% meeting the expected standard. There is a strong correlation between school exclusion and poor life outcomes. In 2018 almost 90% young offenders reported having previously been excluded from school.

Routes to career success are also impacted by racial inequality. According to the 2020 Parker review, 37% of FTSE 100, 69% of FTSE 250 and 59% of FTSE 350 companies do not have any BAME directors.

The challenges and lack of opportunities that Black boys face can sometimes leave them with a sense of frustration and low self-esteem. This means the astonishing talent of these boys risks going to waste.

Reducing educational and social inequalities, narrowing the attainment gap, and levelling the playing field matters. It matters that Black boys have access to transformative educational and enrichment opportunities, and it matters that they are supported to foster the skills, resilience, and leadership to fulfil their aspirations and purse positive life paths.
